The electrodes have a lifespan of approx. 2 to 2.5 years. Over time, the quality of the adhesive gel located on the electrodes decreases (even in the packaging). If the quality of the gel deteriorates, for example by drying out, the electrodes will no longer stick properly and the shock will not be delivered efficiently.   
  
The Face-to-Face function of the electrodes measures the quality of the gel and indicates, through the warning LED light on the Smarty defibrillator, when the quality of the electrodes is no longer up to standard. It is recommended to replace the electrodes before the expiry date shown on the packaging has passed, regardless of the defibrillator's warning.
